What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a phenolic compound that naturally occurs in some plants and has been found to have strong antioxidant activity in animals. Plants create resveratrol to protect themselves against the effects of poor growing conditions, severe weather and attacks by insects and disease.

Resveratrol and Health:

Numerous studies showing the benefits of moderate red wine consumption on health sparked the research on resveratrol over a decade ago. Red wine differs from white in that it is fermented with the resveratrol-containing grape skins present. This fermentation process imparts the resveratrol (and other anitoxidants in the grape skin) into the finished wine. Early studies suggested that the intake of red wine (and therefore resveratrol) may yield health benefits.

In animals, resveratrol has been shown to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Recent studies on animals have shown resveratrol to dramatically increase life span, increase athletic endurance and mimic the benefits of a calorie-restricted diet.

In nature, resveratrol exists in two different isomers, trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol; these prefixes refer to the shape of the molecule. Researchers have identified trans-resveratrol as the biologically active of the two isomers.
