Kudzu root is high in isoflavones, such as daidzein, as well as isoflavone glycosides, such as daidzin and puerarin. Depending on its growing conditions, the total isoflavone content varies from 1.77-12.0%, with puerarin in the highest concentration, followed by daidzin and daidzein.

Function
Ge Gen root is rich in isoflavones, such as puerarin,daidzin and daidzein. Isoflavones of Ge Gen show very similar function to estrogen, thus they can be used to treat the syndromes of menopausal women. Ge Gen Extract is also active in boosting blood volume of the coronary artery vessels, promoting the production of body fluid to quench thirst, improving the eruption of measles to allaying fever and stopping diarrhea. It relieves tension in the muscles and promotes blood circulation. This herb is traditionally used to treat fever, colds, migranes, and diarrhea.

Like other flavonoid substances, the constituents in kudzu root are associated with improved microcirculation and blood flow through the coronary arteries. A widely publicized 1993 animal study showed that both daidzin and daidzein inhibit the desire for alcohol. The authors concluded the Ge Gen root extract may in fact be useful for reducing the urge for alcohol and as treatment for alcoholism, Although this has not yet been proven in controlled clinical studies with humans.
Application:
Pueraria extract has been introduced just recently. With modern extraction technology, the extract from dried roots is standardized and prepared in the form of powder and solution.
1ÿ¢Estrogenic Effects
To evaluate the estrogenic effects of Pueraria extract, a clinical trial in five female volunteers with menopausal symptoms showed that it clearly improved the signs and symptoms related to menopause such as, hot flushes, frustration, sleep disorder, skin dryness, high blood cholesterol, oligomenorrhoea and amenorrhoea; with no change in the blood cells, liver and kidney functions.
2. As Cosmetics
The extract solution is used in cosmetic industry such as preparations of breast cream, eye gel, and skin moisturizer. When Pueraria is taken as a dietary supplement, its phytoestrogen constituents will naturally alleviate symptoms occurring as a result of the aging process and a deficiency in estrogen level, e.g., sagging breasts, wrinkled skin, marrow loss, gray hair, and etc. These aging signs and symptoms will, to a certain extent, be reversed.
3. Lowered Risks of Cardiovascular-related Diseases
There are evidences that phytoestrogen consumption contributes to lower risks of cardiovascular related
diseases. In a study, it was proven that phytoestrogens in Pueraria can decrease the level of LDL cholesterol and increase the level of HDL cholesterol in the blood, therefore reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, it was reported that subjects who consumed Pueraria extract at least three times daily had a decrease in the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride. Moreover, in toxicity study in rats, a very significant reduction of blood cholesterol levels in all groups of Pueraria -treated rats was also observed.
4.Headache and Migraine
Symptomatic improvement was achieved in 35 of 42 migraine cases. In hypertensive patients, it improved the cerebral blood flow, lowered the vascular resistance, and shortened the influx time in about 50% of the cases .
5.Hypertension
The total Pueraria isoflavones (100 mg daily in two doses) was given for a course of 2-8 weeks to 222 cases of hypertension with pain and stiffness of the neck. 78-90% of the cases reported relief of neck symptoms. In 90% of the cases remedial effects appeared after one week of administration, persisting for one to two weeks. In some patients there were no relapses during a period of 3 to 9 months after discontinuation of therapy.
6.Coronary Disease and Angina Pectoris
191 cases of coronary disease and angina pectoris were treated with Ge-Gen tablet (each tablet contains 10 mg of total isoflavones), 3-4 tablets three times a day. This treatment was effective in relief of anginal pain and in improving ECG . Another group of 110 cases of coronary disease were treated with a compound of Puerarin extract, 90% of them had relief of anginal pain and 43% had marked improvement.
