Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (M-β-CD)is one of the most effective solubilizers for poorly soluble substances and an excellent stabilizer for many chemical compounds among known cyclodextrin derivatives. Due to its remarkable solubilizing and encapsulating properties, and its solubility in both water and organic solvents, M-β-CD is widely used in pharmaceuticals, food, pesticides, cosmetics, daily chemicals, chemical industries, textile dyeing and finishing, chromatography, and functional materials.

Thickeners are widely used in water-based paints, adhesives, textile printing pastes, inks, synthetic emulsions, or natural emulsions because they can improve the flow, application, and thixotropy of paints, addressing issues such as sagging and sedimentation.

Methyl-β-cyclodextrin can efficiently regulate the viscosity of thickener systems by complexing and decomplexing the hydrophobic groups of hydrophobically modified thickeners. Methyl-β-cyclodextrin, however, is a highly efficient viscosity inhibitor. Polyurethane thickeners require only 7% M-β-CD to reduce the system’s viscosity to 2000 mPa•s, meeting usage requirements. This efficiency surpasses that of 10% ethylene glycol.

Research indicates that M-β-CD can maintain the stability of color dispersions without the need for additional components or dispersants. It also improves the compatibility of incompatible surfactants, overcoming adverse water sensitivity and foaming issues. Moreover, it enhances the compatibility of colorants without the need for additional surfactants.
