The electrical conductivity of graphite results from its special crystal structure and electronic structure . Graphite is a layered structure of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycombed hexagonal arrangement, the carbon atoms in each layer tightly bound by a covalent bond . Each carbon atom contributes three covalent bonds to other carbon atoms, while retaining one free electron . These free electrons are able to move freely within the graphite layer, forming an electric current, which gives the graphite conductivity. 12
In addition, the electrical conductivity of graphite is also related to its electron density and its layered structure. The carbon atoms in graphite have a highly dispersed electron density, which allows electrons to be highly dispersed and move freely in graphite. The layered structure of graphite not only allows electrons to move freely between layers to form an electric current, but this structure also makes graphite highly conductive. Interactions between layers (such as the van der Waals forces ) allow electrons to move relatively freely between layers, although their conductivity is slightly worse than within them. 23
